What would your family actually pay?

The sticker price at a California private college runs $47,115 to $85,202 a year, and almost nobody pays it. Every campus reports to the federal government what its freshmen actually paid after grants and scholarships, by family income. Pick your family's income below and the 75 four-year universities in California re-sort under it. For a family earning $75–110k, Stanford came to $8,816 a year and UC Berkeley to $18,713.

Method. "What a family paid" is IPEDS's average net price by income: the full cost of attendance (tuition, fees, books, room, board and other expenses) minus all grant and scholarship aid from any source, averaged over full-time, first-time freshmen who received federal Title IV aid in that family-income band, 2022-23. It is the federal government's definition, reported by every campus on the same form. UC and CSU figures are for California residents. "Sticker" is the same year's published on-campus cost of attendance for an in-state freshman, from the same filing, so the discount is like against like.

What it does not say. It is an average of freshmen who got federal aid, not a quote: a family at the top of a band pays more than one at the bottom, and a campus can be generous on average and stingy to you. It says nothing about who gets in — the admit-rate column is there so a $8,816 Stanford is read next to its 4% admit rate. The "over $110k" band is the least representative of all five, because it only counts families who received federal aid at that income — at a private college that is often a small, unusual group. Cells marked † rest on fewer than 15 freshmen; a dash means the campus reported no one in that band. A campus that reported a net price below zero is shown as $0.
