The Cal State Catch

Every school on this page has students who exceed both state standards and gets almost nothing from UC's six selective campuses. It is not that these students cannot get into a four-year university. Cal State admits them by the hundred. One system looked at the same applicants and reached the opposite conclusion.

High Tech LA: 14 selective UC offers. 184 Cal State admissions. The two figures are not like for like and are not meant to be — UC's are one year, Cal State's are three, and the campuses differ in what they offer. What the pairing shows is a school whose graduates are demonstrably admissible to California public universities, and a set of six campuses that did not admit them.

Limited to schools with at least 40 UC freshman applicants, at least 25 students exceeding both state standards, no more than 0.5 selective-UC offers per such student, and at least 50 Cal State admissions. Cal State figures are the sum of three annual snapshots (Fall 2022, 2023, 2024) and CSU suppresses any group under 10, so every Cal State number here is a floor rather than a total — the real counts are higher. UC figures are Fall 2025 and UC suppresses counts under three. Selective campuses are UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, Davis, UCSB and Irvine; a student counts once per campus.
