Analysis · UC Irvine · Fall 2025

The Irvine Shutout

A campus can turn down a school's applicants one at a time. It can also turn down every one of them. These 52 California high schools each sent UC Irvine at least twenty applications of their own and got nothing back — while the rest of UC admitted 2,161 of their students. Click any school for its full record.

Jordan High sent Irvine 72 applications. Irvine admitted fewer than three of them. UC as a whole admitted 72 of its 91 applicants. These schools are in 14 different counties — Los Angeles and San Diego, but also Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Sacramento. It is not one region, and it is not only the schools you would expect: Archie Williams High in San Anselmo has 73 students clearing the top bar on both state tests, and sent Irvine 58 applications.

applications to Irvine from these 52 schools, and 2,161 admits from the rest of UC.
What suppression can hide
104
UC masks counts under three, so at most two per school — against about 349 Irvine would have admitted at its own statewide rate.
Were the applicants weaker?
3.2×
Yes, somewhat — and it barely matters. Matching every school to the admit rate of schools with a similar share of top scorers moves the gap from 3.4× to 3.2× what suppression could hide.

A school qualifies only if it sent this campus at least 20 applications of its own — applications to UC generally are not enough, since a school that sent a campus two or three was never passed over by it. Applications and admits per campus are from the UC Information Center's source-school file, Fall 2025. UC suppresses any admit count below three, so a displayed 0 means fewer than three, not certainly none; the panel above states the most that can hide. “At its own rate” applies the campus's statewide admit rate (22.7% of applications) to each school's applications, which assumes its applicants are typical — the 3.2× figure re-tests that by matching each school to the admit rate of schools with a similar share of students clearing the top bar on both state tests (38 of the 52 schools carry those scores). “Other UCs said yes” counts unduplicated students admitted anywhere in UC, so it is students where the column beside it is applications.
