The Shutout

A campus can turn down a school's applicants one at a time. It can also turn down every last one. These are the California high schools where a selective UC campus admitted nobody at all — not a single student — out of a class that applied in numbers. Ranked by how many of the six selective campuses drew a blank. Fall 2025.

Pleasant Valley High sent 53 UC applicants and has 75 students exceeding both state standards. UCLA and Irvine admitted none of them.A zero is not always a rejection of everyone — UC masks any count under three, so a campus that admitted one or two students from a school also shows as zero here. Every school below sent at least 50 applicants and drew a zero from two or more campuses, which makes a masked count a small number either way.

Selective campuses are UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, Davis, UCSB and Irvine; a student counts once per campus that admits them. A school must have sent at least 20 freshman applications to a campus before that campus counts as having passed it over, and to schools drawing such a zero from at least two of the six. UC suppresses any admit count below three, so a displayed 0 means “fewer than three,” not necessarily none — the ranking should be read as “nearly nobody” rather than a literal zero. Students exceeding both standards = the count meeting the highest CAASPP Smarter Balanced achievement level in ELA and in math, 2024–25. Poverty (FRPM) = share eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Meals, CDE 2024–25 (California's enrollment-weighted average is about 63%). Click any school for its full profile.
